Inlays and Onlays
Scoresby “Three-Quarter” Crowns
Dental inlays and onlays offer added strength and coverage when a tooth is too damaged to repair with a filling. Each of these ceramic or metal restorations are made in a lab, much like a dental crown, only they cover less surface area than a conventional “cap”.
Using advanced bonding techniques and design, inlays and onlays cover and protect a larger surface of the tooth than a conventional filling. We frequently recommend them on teeth that have suffered from:
- Heavy fractures or wear
- Abscesses, leading to a root canal
- Large cavities
- Moderate to severe cracks
Instead of attempting to fill a large area and compromising the structural integrity of the tooth, we place an inlay or onlay in the area to protect the portion that’s left. The primary advantage of inlays and onlays is that they are more conservative than crowns, which require further tooth reduction.
What to Expect During Treatment
If you’ve ever had a crown, the inlay/onlay treatment process is similar. Two separate visits are scheduled; the first to prep your tooth and take an impression and the second about two weeks later to bond your new restoration in place.
Getting an inlay or onlay feels similar to what it’s like to have a filling or crown. We’ll numb your tooth to prevent any discomfort but if you’re feeling anxious you can also request dental sedation to help you relax.
