Dental Sealants
Protecting Your Scoresby Family’s Smiles
What if you could take steps in addition to brushing and flossing to lower you or your child’s risk of getting cavities? With fissure sealants, you can. The protective coatings make it easier to clean hard-to-reach chewing surfaces of back teeth, which are more prone to cavities.
A Quick, Comfortable Process
Having fissure sealants placed is minimally invasive and generally only takes a few minutes per tooth. No numbing is necessary!
First, the tooth is thoroughly cleaned. Then a small amount of etch is applied to the deep grooves and fissures, to slightly roughen the outer layer of enamel and make it friendlier to the bonding agent. Next, the sealant is applied to the chewing surfaces (and any fissures extending down the side of the tooth) and cured with a specialized bright light.
With sealants in place, these cavity-prone surfaces are easier than ever to clean. While flossing is still necessary to clean between your teeth, fissure sealants make brushing more effective, especially for younger patients.
A Few Things to Keep in Mind
Since fissure sealants are not a permanent restoration, they may need to be touched up from time to time. We’ll evaluate them at each checkup to make sure the chewing surfaces are fully covered.
Be sure to avoid particularly sticky foods, such as caramel or taffy, which can easily pull the sealant off. For example, sugar free gum is an appropriate alternative to stickier bubble gum.
